HMS Admiral, launched in 1865, displaced around 9,000 tons and was armed with a mix of muzzle-loading guns, including smoothbore and rifled cannons. HMS Anson, launched in 1866, was slightly larger, with a displacement of approximately 10,600 tons. It was equipped with a similar armament to HMS Admiral.
