It is the first operational aircraft carrier in the Chinese navy and was originally built as the Soviet Navy's Kuznetsov-class aircraft carrier named "Riga." After the Soviet Union dissolved, the partially completed carrier was purchased by China from Ukraine in 1998 and underwent extensive refitting and modernization.
